Geography and Climate The island of Lombok is located east of Bali and west of the island of Sumbawa. Tourism is not quite as developed as on Bali which makes Lombok the perfect getaway. Escape to the picturesque mountainside, enjoy the beautiful landscapes and experience the white sandy beaches of Lombok and the Gili islands with their perfect diving and snorkeling opportunities. The Lombok Southcoast is the dryest part of the island and has a wonderful coastline with unspoiled white sand beaches and bays with magnificent surfing possibilities The northern haflf of the island is dominated by the huge vulcanic Mt. Rinjani range. The mt. Rinjani reaches up to 3726 Meter above sea level. And for those who have a good condition it is certainly worth the effort of making a tracking tour to the rim and crater. Lombok certainly is the perfect place to relax and unwind from your daily life. The off-peak season in Lombok extends from November to May and the peak season runs between May and October. The ideal time to visit Lombok is the month of May when the weather is just perfect with bright daylight and a green scenery.

The local inhabitants of Lombok are called Sasaks, they speak Indonesian as well as their local Sasak language. The other main ethnics include Balinese, Chinese, Arabian and Javanese. Lombok has three main districts with three capital cities: Mataram in the west, Praya in central and Selong in east Lombok, the majority of commerce is in the capital city of Mataram in west Lombok. The majority of the population on Lombok are Muslim, every Friday around 12.00 noon Muslims go to the mosques just like Christians go to Church on Sunday. Therefore, on that day, most businesses and government offices are closed for half of the day and then re-open again after praying (not including Senggigi). A large part of the Lombok population originates from Bali, so you can also find a lot of hindu temples, architecture and hindu traditions on Lombok. If you are planning on traveling around the island and visiting small villages it is more respectable to wear slacks or knee length shorts, a shirt with sleeves or a sarong. If you happen to be here during Ramadan, which is the Muslim month of fasting from sunrise to sunset, please do not eat, drink or smoke in public during the daytime in this month long fasting Even though the people don't seem to be offended in the common tourist areas like, Senggigi and the Gili islands, it is better to respect the people and their beliefs.

Maximum draw is 1,25 Million Rp. per withdrawal. You can make maximal 3 withdrawals a day. But if you plan to go to the countryside or the Gili islands be sure to bring some cash. All tough you can probably use a credit card in the most of the tourist places. |

When changing money there are many money changers in Lombok, the best rates are usually in Senggigi. Money changers prefer new, clean, large bills but will accept smaller denominations at a lower rate. If you have travelers cheques the rate will be less than bank notes. Be sure to count your money before you leave the money changers, you can also check local banks but the rate is slightly lower than outside. Re-counting the money in front of the money changer is a must and is not considered offensive. A suggestion when changing money: If you plan on making small purchases be sure to carry small denominations with you because many sellers do not have change. The Rupiah comes in denominations of 100000, 50000, 10000, 5000, 1000, 500 and 100, remember to carefully check the number of zeros on the notes when making purchases.

Vehicle Rentals Don't miss Lombok’s beautiful scenery. So you can choose to rent a car or motorcycle and drive yourself , but then you must have an International Driving License. Remember if you collide with anything, or it collides with you, you may be responsible for all costs therefore travel insurance is always recommended. Renting a car is with driver is therefore a good alternative, and you can relax and enjoy the view. (It is normal to tip your driver pocket money for meals if you stop for lunch or dinner). Motorcycles are a convenient and inexpensive way to get around the island but tourists are frequently injured in motorbike accidents. If you rent a bike drive slowly and very defensively, helmets are required by law but those provided by rental agencies offer little protection.
